Downtown Los Angeles (Pt. 1)

In 2016 I packed my bags and decided to start renting an apartment in downtown Los Angeles. I’ve been attracted to the vibrance of the entertainment industry since adolescence, and Los Angeles is its capital.

I’ve worked remote for the entirety of my career, and my living preferences are prioritized based on areas that seem well suited for cultivating professional and personal growth.

As a Michigan native, the atmosphere of Los Angeles reminds me of Detroit. I view Los Angeles as a city in a constant state of reinvention. It’s filled with ambitious people working to make their impact on the world.

There are an endless number of places to eat, things to do, and sights to see. It takes a lifetime to truly absorb what this city has to offer. But for those passing through, I’ve assembled a few recommendations. In no particular order…

Recommendation #1: Otium
Otium is my favorite restaurant. The atmosphere is lively, modern, and welcoming. Most importantly, the food / drinks are incredible. Chef Tim Hollingsworth does a phenomenal job keeping sourcing ingredients and consistently delivering a high quality dining experience. It can be a bit pricey, but well worth the experience. The tomahawk and spinach bucatini are my go-tos.

Recommendation #2: The Last Book Store
If someone constructed a tribute to The Pagemaster, the end result would look something like The Last Book Store. Stop by to enjoy an assortment of art, rare books, current-day reads, and snap some enviable Instagram content.

Recommendation #3: The Broad
The Broad is an art museum built by business mogul / philanthropist, Eli Broad. It’s the home of his personal art collection, displayed for the public, and it’s quite impressive. Even if you don’t consider yourself an art connoisseur, The Broad as a standalone venue is a fun, dream-like atmosphere that you’ll surely enjoy. Entry is free with a scheduled appointment on their website, or you can pay a fee at the door.

Recommendation #4: 71 Above
71 Above is a restaurant at the top of the U.S. Bank building. It’s a perfect place to hit if you’re looking to grab a fancy drink, or impress friends / that special someone. Here you’ll experience unparalleled views of Los Angeles. Best to hit at sunset!

Recommendation #5: Nickel Diner
Nickel Diner is my favorite breakfast joint in downtown Los Angeles. I highly recommend trying their homemade pop-tarts. Total game changer.

Recommendation #6: 82
This one is for all my fellow gamers! EightyTwo is a barcade in downtown Los Angeles with an assortment of pinball and free standing arcade machines. It’s a great spot to swing through if you’re looking for a fun night out with friends, or if you’d like to show off your Street Fighter skills. Note: they broadcast all the SF matches on a projector, so study your combos or risk embarrassment!

Recommendation #7: Grand Central Market

Basically LA’s version of Pike Place Market, GCM is an assortment of shops and boutique food joints bursting with local flavor. It’s perhaps most famously known as the home of Eggslut, but you’ll find all sorts of cool eateries scattered throughout the space. McConnell’s has some fantastic ice cream, and G&B Coffee is well regarded among locals for their brews.

Hopefully this will help get your exploration of downtown Los Angeles started! If you end up checking out any of my recommendations, be sure to drop a note over on social. I’d love to hear what you think.

Enjoy Los Angeles!
